Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office Academy Requirements

The police academy starts in August of each year and continues through late spring. Academy class hours are 8:30am to 4:00pm Monday - Friday. The police academy costs around $6,500 to attend. Financial aid is available through the college and a student must apply at JCC. Candidates must me a resident of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, or Allegany counties to attend this academy. Candidates must be appointed by a law enforcement organization in their jurisdiction to attend the academy.

Background Investigation:

An extensive background check is a part of the selection process. Candidates must have no Felony convictions. Misdemeanors may disqualify a candidate under certain conditions.

Age Requirements, Physical Requirements & Psychological Requirements:

Anyone taking the civil service exam for deputy sheriff must be 20 years old on the date of the exam. Candidates can not have reached their 35th birthday prior to or on the date of the exam. Candidates must be at least 20 years old to attend the academy and must be 21 prior to February of the following year.

Must undergo a physical. Candidates must have vision that is at 20/100 uncorrected and 20/20 corrected. Color blindness disqualifies candidates from attendance.

Males must complete a 1.5 mile run in a designated time, complete a designated number of sit-ups in a minute, and designated minimum push-ups with no time limit.

Candidates must pass a written psychological examination.

Educational Requirements:

Candidates should have at least 42 college credits prior to attending the academy.
